Contravention
Music: Joe Galen
This piece is a video accompaniment for musician Joe Galen’s song Contravention. Set in a theatre the film focuses on a Magpie who is resurrected and moved by several players. These creatures mimic the magpie, both in dress and action and create a false impression of life with their puppetry. It is both a macabre dance of death and an expression of losing control, but in the end there is hope as the bird escapes the constraints of the stage.

Bears Book
Bears, September 2009
This is an illustrated book about a flight of fantasy involving a bear army and world domination. It follows on from two books I made at university ‘Dreams of Beards’ and ‘Pirates’. All the books are naive in both word and picture and act as a light hearted guide to the more childish aspect of my imagination.
Bears- paint on acetate, coloured card.

A Masquerade- The National Media Museum
A Masquerade
Filmed in The National Media Museum’s Animation Booth, this piece was made as part of the AYUP scheme, each animator spending up to four weeks animating under the watchful eye of the museum visitors.
A Masquerade is a short piece about the dangers of inviting a stranger into your home. In this film I am exploring the idea of disguise and social behaviour, looking at the masks we wear everyday to hide and protect ourselves from others. At the end of the film these disguises crumble leaving only the raw reality of the unfortunate host and her guest.

Islington Mill Exhibition
Islington Mill ‘You Fancy Animal’ exhibition- April 2008
You Fancy Animal showcased the artists’ use of a low tech and often handmade approach. In this they were moving against a lot of the current trends in a contemporary art scene that seemed to celebrate both the high tech and the purely conceptual. The show embraced craft, skilled and often time consuming, intricate work which saw the process of making as important as the finished piece. Each artist aimed to tell a story, explore ideas and make the viewer think without attempting to get a reaction via shock or disgust. You Fancy Animal demonstrated that artists do not need expensive materials to make work and celebrated the beauty of the flawed.
I exhibited two pieces:
The LycanthropistA series of models detailing mans transformation into a wolf

The Ancestor, The Great Bear and The King of NowhereAn animation following the story of a bear god who travels to the frozen wastes to take revenge on an evil king who is responsible for the destruction of the bears (see below for stills)

The Mouse Hunt- Graduation Film
The Mouse Hunt- June 2006
This was my graduation film from the Interactive Arts Degree at Manchester Metropolitan University.
The film follows the story of the Mice Men, a small (in stature) tribe of people who live in our forgotten spaces, behind the walls and under the floors. We follow the tribe as they engage in a hunting ceremony and using disguise, ritual and magic in order to capture and kill a mouse.
The story was initially inspired by a mouse infestation, but I also took inspiration from my experiences living in Finland and a struggle with vegetarianism. This fed into the theme of animal human relationships and the connection between hunters and hunted and our disengagement from the food chain. The narrative construct of transformation and disguise was inspired by my research in my theoretical study. All the themes that appear in this film have continued to feed into my work post graduation.
